Jan Van Eyck was born in 1395 (approximately - the exact date is not known) and he died in 1441. He belongs to the school of art known as Early Netherlandish, which includes painters active during the 15th and 16th centuries in the Netherlands, especially those artists who practised in the cities of Bruges and Ghent. The Marriage of the Arnolfini is a portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his bride Giovanna Cenami who were married in 1434. Some think that the painting represents a marriage certificate for the couple, but the National Gallery disputes this interpretation. You can see the painting in the National Gallery or visit them online for more information.
