The Hireling Shepherd 1851 Holman Hunt

This image is in the Public Domain.

The Hireling Shepherd is by William Holman Hunt, the founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. You can see the shepherd neglecting his sheep (one of them is wandering over into a cornfield) in order to dally with the girl. The secondary meaning is that the picture is an allegory for the state of the church at the time. Read more at Manchester Art Gallery which owns the picture.
