William Holman Hunt was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, along with John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The Awakening Conscience, 1853,
This picture shows a man and a woman living "in sin" - she is a kept woman. (These terms seems rather outdated these days). The awakening referred to in the title is the moment when the young woman realises that what she is doing is wrong.
