Autumn (Detail)
There appear to be two copies of this painting:
A small version at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, c.1860 - 1862, Oil on panel, 24.7 x 35.5 cm
and a larger painting at Norwich Castle Museum (you will have to scroll down the page) oil on canvas, 1860, 79.6 cm x 108.7 cm
If you look closely you can see small differences between the 2 paintings.
This is an early Sandys painting and the title "Autumn" can be seen represented in the setting sun, the aging solider and the time of year.
Read more here and see a larger image at Art Renewal Center (It's a little dark and the left hand edge is degraded and the colours are not nearly as vivid as they appear on both the Birmingham and Norwick museum websites - but its the best large image we can find and it does show a great amount of detail. It is of the Birmingham painting.)
