John Rogers Herbert, 1810 - 1890
Born in Maldon, Essex, John Rogers Herbert begain his career as an artist by painting portraits and historical subjects but after his conversion to Catholicism in 1840 he painted mainly religious subjects.

The title of this painting is from Psalm 104, verse 15. The full text is
"And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man`s heart." King James version.
