Rogier van der Weyden 1399-1464
Contemporary with Jan van Eyck, van der Weyden belongs (along with van Eyck) to the Early Netherlandish school of painting. He was born in Tournai, Belgium, and spent most of his working life in Brussels and was the most famous painter in Europe at the time of his death. He painted mostly religious subjects and is particularly noted for his expertise in depicting emotion and grief.

The St Ivo in this painting refers to Ivo of Kermartin (1253-1303) who is the patron saint of lawyers and abandoned children, having himself been a lawyer and a benefactor to, and advocate of, the poor.
