Antoine Watteau 1684 - 1721
Full name: Jean-Antoine Watteau
Watteau was (technically) a French painter having been born in Valenciennes, a Flemish town that had just been annexed by Louis XIV. Most of his paintings depict idylic country party scenes called fêtes galantes (literally, gallant festivities) and in fact Watteau is thought to have invented this genre of painting. Wikipedia has more information on Watteau and on fêtes galantes.
