George Stubbs (1724 - 1806) is best known for his paintings of horses. In fact, in the 1750s he spent 18 months dissecting horses and published The Anatomy of the Horse in 1766. He also painted more exotic animals, portraits and history paintings. The painting Horse Frightened by a Lion 1770 is one of several paintings on the same theme.
