Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904)
Often categorized as part of the Hudson River School in the past, Heade is now regarded as an exponent of the American Luminist school of art. Luminism emphasises the effect of light in paintings and is sometimes thought of as an offshoot of the Hudson River School.
Heade began his artistic life painting portraits and scenes of everyday life but then switched to landscapes, still-lifes and seacapes after meeting many of the Hudson River School artists in New York.

There is an interesting story that you might like to read about a couple of paintings by Heade turning up at a "yard" sale in the US.

Orchids, passion flower, and hummingbirds, 1880.
One of the things Heade is famous for is his paintings of South American hummingbirds and exotic flora. This is a prime example.
