Frederick Leighton 1830-1896
Sometimes referred to as Lord Frederick Leighton, although he actually died the day after he was made the 1st Baron Leighton. As he died unmarried, the Barony was died with him, creating a record for the shortest Barony in English history! He was an English painter who specialised in historical, biblical and classical subjects and his style and subject matter shows an affinity with the Pre-Raphaelites, with whom he associated.

Flaming June 1895
The painting is now owned by the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico and there is a fascinating story (to long to tell here) about its history and how it came to be in a museum in Puerto Rico. Full details at the Victorian Society website, from their June 2005 newsletter. (Scroll down or use your browser's find on page facility to locate the article)
