Angelica Kauffman (Swiss, 1741-1807)
Full name Maria Anna Angelika/Angelica Katharina Kauffmann. Although she was born in Switzerland, Kauffman grew up in Austria and spent several years in England (1776-1781) where she became a great friend of the artist Joshua Reynolds.
She painted portraits, literary and history subjects.

The Cornelia in the painting is Cornelia Scipionis Africana (190BC-100BC), daughter of Scipio Africanus (the Roman statesman who defeated Hannibal) and the mother of the Roman reformers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus. Because of her upstanding lifestyle, she is remembered as the model of a virtuous Roman woman.
