John Everett Millais (1829 - 1896) was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

This painting caused controversy when it was first exhibited because of its stark realism.
The young Jesus has cut his hand (pre figuring the crucifixion) and is being comforted by his mother Mary. Also present are Joseph, Anne (Mary's mother), a young John the Baptist on the right carrying a bowl of water and an unknown assistant.
