Jacques-Louis David 1748 - 1825
David (pronounced da-veed) was a French history painter in the style of painting generally known as Neoclassical, with an emphasis on the use of sharply defined colours and of light and shade.
David was a supporter of the French Revolution.

The Death of Socrates, 1787
Socrates 469BC - 399BC was told to recant his politically radical ideas or be sentenced to death by drinking hemlock. Socrates chose death. David shows him calmly talking to his disciples on his death bed.
