Walter Langley, 1854 - 1922
Langley was born into a poor working class family in Birmingham's inner city - his mother took in laundry in order to pay for Walter's evening classes at the Birmingham School of Design. It is therefore no surprise to find that Langley's artistic output was concerned largly with social realism and the conditions of the working class. He settled in Newlyn, Cornwall, in the early 1880s and became the first of the "Newlyn Art Colony". Please go to Jordan & Chard Reference to read more about this fascinating artist.

Never Morning Wore to Evening but Some Heart Did Break, 1894
This heart-rending painting (you can see it in all its glory at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) shows the despair of a young woman whose fisherman husband did not make it back that day. The title is from Tennyson's poem 'In Memoriam A. H. H'
