Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 - 1882)
was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, along with John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt.

Beata Beatrix, 1877
According to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, (which owns this particular picture), the work was left unfinished by Rossetti and was completed by Ford Madox Brown.

This is not the only version - The Tate Britain owns the first version painted by Rossetti between 1864-70. Rossetti also made other versions. In addition to that, you may also be aware of the work by Charles Fairfax Murray who painted a replica c. 1900-10. All of these versions are slightly different.

Rossetti's Beata Beatrix depicts Beatrice Portinari (from Dante Alighieri's poem La Vita Nuova) at the moment of her death. Rossetti used his wife Elizabeth Siddal as the model. Elizabeth committed suicide in 1862 and this painting was a memorial to her.
There is a full discussion of the picture at The Victorian Web.
