John Everett Millais (1829 - 1896) was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Contrast the idylic and vividly beautiful background (including rainbow) with the tattered clothing of the two girls - they are obviously very poor and struggle to make a living. What makes the painting even more poignant is that fact that the blind girl cannot see the beauty that surrounds her. Nevertheless, there is a serene quality to the blind girl and a familiar and comforting closeness between her and the younger girl.
