Usually known by just his first name, Raphael was an important Italian painter of the Renaissance and a contemporary of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. He painted mainly historical and religious subjects.


The Canigiani Holy Family, 1504 - 1506.
Canigiani is the name of the family who owned the painting initially.
It depicts the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth (Mary's cousin and the mother of John the Baptist) with their children. Joseph is standing over them. Abov
e we see several putti - often seen in Renaissance art, putti are plump, cherubic boys who symbolise love.
It is owned by Alte Pinakothek Gallery in Munich.
