Sandro Botticelli 1445 - 1510 An Italian painter belonging to the Florentine school of painting in the early part of the Renaissance (a cultural movement with its roots in Italy and lasting from the 14th to the 17th century). Botticelli tended to paint grand historial and religious subjects. The Birth of Venus, 1485-86 This painting depicts Venus (on a shell) emerging from the sea, fully grown. The two figures on the left, Zephyyr abd Chloris, are blowing her on to the shore where a woman, Hora, is waiting to cover her with a red robe. It is thought that this, along with other Botticeli paintings, was inspired by the descriptions of the historian Lucian (AD 125 - ~ AD 180) of Ancient Greece masterpieces. It was painted for the villa of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici and is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. More information: Wikipedia Article Berger Foundation |
