Frans Hals, 1580 - 1666, was a Dutch painter best known for portrait paintings. He painted wealthy patrons as well as a whole range of people from all walks of life. He is noted for his large group portraits. He belonged to the Baroque era.

The Laughing Cavalier, 1624.
This painting is now famous as The Laughing Cavalier but it did not get this name until Victorian times - formerly it was known simply as "Portrait of a Young Man". All we know of the man is from the Latin inscription at the top right of the painting which tells us that he was 26 years old. (Æ'TA SVÆ 26/A°1624 expands to etatis suae 26, anno 1624).
The Laughing Cavalier is in The Wallace Collection in London.
