Claude Lorrain (1600 - 1682) was a French artish of the Baroque Period who spent most of his working life in Italy. He is known chiefly for his landscape paintings done in the classical style (see here and here for an explantation of classicism). His name was actually Claude Gellée but he became known after the area of France in which he grew up. You can find out more at Wikipedia. Landscape with Apollo and Mercury (1645) displays the classical theme and style for which Claude Lorrain is known.
The painting is in Rome at the Galleria Doria Pamphilj which has a large collection of masterpieces. |
